Over the course of your pet’s life, they may have to undergo certain types of surgical procedures – from routine spays/neuters to more involved surgeries such as the removal of foreign objects that they accidentally swallow. Whatever the case, you can be confident in our team as we use the most current surgical techniques and technologies. Our state-of-the-art surgical suite allows us to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures. Our surgery suite is equipped with a CO2 laser which is used for most of our surgeries. Aside from maintaining a high quality of medical care, our team also strives to make both you and your pet comfortable throughout the entire process, making sure that you are well-informed about your pet’s entire experience. Compassionate care will always be our top priority.

What is the pre-anaesthetic blood screening?

This is a blood test that is run here in the hospital prior to your pet’s surgery. It tests the organ functions, blood counts and clotting function of your pet. The pre-anaesthetic blood screening is done to assure safety during surgery and the ability to heal following surgery. We utilize the safest available anesthetics to provide an extra margin of safety, especially for our older or high-risk patients. Using the most modern equipment, the patient’s vital signs are monitored during all anaesthetic procedures. Pre-anaesthetic bloodwork is highly recommended for all patients and is offered as an option for routine surgeries of young patients. All patients will receive intravenous (IV) fluids included in the cost of their surgery.

How long do the sutures stay in after my pet’s surgery?

Procedures involving sutures require them to be removed in 14 days following the surgery.

What types of surgery does your hospital offer?

How should I prepare my dog/cat/pet for their surgery?

The pre-surgery (and post-op care) measures that you need to take really depends on your pet’s unique health condition and which exact procedure they will undergo. Well in advance, we will review with you all of the precautions that you need to take to get your pet ready for surgery. For example, one of the common steps that we require is that on the morning of their procedure, your pet should not eat or drink any food or beverages. At West Brant, we require the following prior to your pet’s procedure:

• All animals must be current on vaccinations, and have written proof, prior to surgery:
• All animals must be off food or water by midnight the day before surgery
• All animals being admitted for surgery should arrive at the hospital between 8 to 8:30 the morning of surgery to be admitted by a veterinary technician. Please allow 15 minutes of your time for this process. New clients/patients will also be seen by a veterinarian.
• Surgeries take place Monday to Friday
• Pets receiving major surgery, spays, or declaws must stay overnight after their procedures
• Pets can be picked up the following day after 9 AM
